What is the target driving speed for the brake burnishing process?

The Model S onboard computer advises that the required speed you need to hit to start the process of bedding in the brakes is 46 miles per hour.

Why is it important not to bring the vehicle to a standstill?

Braking the vehicle is necessary to perform the burnishing process, but it’s very important not to brake to a complete stop. If this happens, material from the brake pads may transfer to the brake disc. This may cause thickness variation – which will lead to excessive runout and will register to the driver as a juddering feeling.

Where should I drive to bed in the brakes?

You need to choose a suitable route to perform the brake burnishing service. Avoid built-up areas where the speed limit is lower, and make sure you have plenty of room to manoeuvre. You’ll be accelerating and braking quite regularly so your surroundings should be quite clear of cars.

What is speed limit mode on a Tesla?

Speed limit mode is a safety setting directing the vehicle not to exceed the top speed that has been input. In Service Mode the setting is set to On by default, but because you may need to go faster to burnish the brakes we recommend setting it to Off before commencing the bedding in procedure.
